Short answer
An RMU is part of the medium-voltage switchgear family, not a separate voltage class. For procurement, compare a compact RMU scheme with a panel-type scheme on the same SLD. Protection, rated duty, extension and site interfaces determine suitability; the word RMU alone does not define them.

Compare functions rather than product labels
Define ring connections, transformer feeders, metering and bus arrangement first. Neither compactness nor a cabinet name proves that two offers have the same protection or test scope.
- An RMU feeder may use fuse or circuit-breaker protection, depending on its specified function.
- Insulation medium, enclosure protection and motorization are separate configuration choices.
- State whether future extension and remote control are required before ordering.
RMU and panel-type MV switchgear: questions to compare
| Aspect | Compact RMU scheme | Panel-type scheme |
|---|---|---|
| Arrangement | Defined combination of functional ways | Separate panels for specified system functions |
| Protection | Confirm each way: switch, fuse or breaker/relay | Confirm breaker, relay and CT/PT scope per panel |
| Extension | Check extensible or non-extensible design | Check bus extension, reserved panels and room layout |
| Maintenance | Confirm isolation and access for the offered design | Confirm compartment access and fixed/withdrawable design |
