Medium Voltage Switchgear Selection Guide

Select MV switchgear by system ratings, panel functions, protection, installation conditions and documented test scope, not model name alone.

Prepared by: JCON ELECUpdated:

Short answer

Start with the single-line diagram, system voltage, rated current, fault duty and panel functions. Then confirm protection, cable interfaces, service conditions and the evidence required for the offered assembly. A model name or voltage label alone is not a complete selection basis.

Turn the system diagram into a panel schedule

Identify each incoming, bus-section, transformer feeder and metering function. Confirm the design with the project engineer before comparing cabinet arrangements.

  • Separate system nominal voltage from the equipment rating requested by the project.
  • List main and auxiliary circuits, including control power and communications.
  • Record installation constraints before choosing fixed or withdrawable arrangements.

Information to confirm

Electrical dutySystem voltage/frequency, rated current, fault current and required withstand duration.
Panel functionsQuantity and function of incomers, outgoing feeders, bus ties, metering and spare panels.
Protection and measurementRelay functions, VCB requirements, CT/PT data, meters, control voltage and trip supply.
Site and layoutIndoor/outdoor location, altitude, ambient conditions, room dimensions, cable entry and access.
Safety and maintenanceRequired interlocking, accessibility, service-continuity and internal-arc classifications, where specified.
DocumentsApplicable standard and edition, relevant assembly test evidence, drawings and routine inspection records.

Compare quotations on the same basis

Ratings togetherCompare current, fault duty and duration together; do not compare only the voltage label.
Complete componentsCheck breaker, relay, CT/PT, auxiliary supply, metering and cable accessories against the same schedule.
Evidence scopeCheck that submitted test documents identify the offered assembly and relevant ratings. A component report alone does not establish complete assembly compliance.
Commercial boundarySeparate drawings, inspections, spares, packing, freight, site services and exclusions.

Frequently asked questions

Is system voltage enough to select a cabinet? No. Current, fault duty and duration, insulation requirements, panel function, protection and installation conditions also need project review.
Are fixed and withdrawable cabinets interchangeable? Not automatically. Maintenance access, isolation, interlocking, room layout and the owner's specification must be checked before changing the arrangement.
Does mentioning IEC 62271-200 prove compliance? No. IEC 62271-200 addresses AC metal-enclosed assemblies. Ask for the applicable edition and evidence covering the offered configuration and ratings.
